Sneerwell

Lady Candour
Sneerwell and Snake

Backbite

With well-rounded characters, a fast-moving plot and fabulous 18th century costumes this is a commendable adaptation by the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. - The Venue SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL • Directed by K. Mantell • Written by R B Sheridan • Redgrave Theatre, Bristol

Using characters names as an important clue, I worked on expressing the individuality of each character, giving the play a harmony while expressing my concept. Two examples are Lady Sneerwell and Snake. Woven green pieces of silk visually represent the link between these two comrades in Evil. Sneerwell's woven stomacher, piped in gold, shows a calculating person of high social status and wealth. Snake’s waistcoat matches this, reinforcing the link between the two that is given in the play. Underneath Candour’s clean white dress she wears a very dirty petticoat, only seen when she walks, and that hints at her hidden nature.
