I was asked to design a touring set for any imaginable venue within a very strict budget. I approached this project from a child's point of view, as they do not go to see a piece of art, but to be part of the action and to play and fight with Robin and his friends.
Hence, I changed the seating arrangement around the stage and the floor cloth extended to the seats. This assisted the children's inclusion with the actors, and all boundaries were broken.
The focal point of the set was an enormous free standing model box. This was located at the back of the set and provided a view of Nottingham and Sherwood Forest, with the castle, houses, church etc. ROBIN HOOD As the action developed, the fiber optics inserted in the model would light up depending on where the action was happening. Each building or house had its own life. The forest would go up in flames or the town would light up and in this way it focused and supported the action.
All the costumes were made from dyed twill and hand stitched to give an authentic finish. The attention to detail of the applique, hems and edges reinforced the idea that the costumes were made by the "actors" who were putting up the show. • Directed by J. Holloway and S.
